library of congress subject headings

Subject headings:

United States -- Description and travel
United States -- Pictorial works
United States -- History -- 1783 - 1865
United States -- Historical geography -- Maps
Rivers -- Hudson River (N.Y. and N.J.) – Pictorial Works

25th edition

Skim introduction; it suggests using Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings (5 ed. 1996) but that is not available in this library. The subject is pretty obviously the United States; I simply read every entry and decided on appropriate ones. The river was a throw-off to find a fifth entry; there was an example in the introduction similar to it.

The Description and travel category had a qualifier that actually maps American Scenery into a subdivision “Early works to 1800” but I chose not to use it; as it is correct in the LCSH sense but literally wrong.

Comparison with existing records:

Yale has:

United States – Description and travel – Early works to 1800
United States – Pictorial works

This nicely reflects the duality of the work, a combination of essays and etchings. It seems misleading about the time period, even if correct according to the schedule.

The Library of Congress has:

United States--Description and travel--1783-1848.

This is obsolete LCSH; the 25th edition has:

Description and travel
-- 1783 – 1848
USE United States – Description and travel
Harvard has:

United States – Description and travel

This agrees with my primary classification.

There were lots of interesting asides exploring LCSH for this and related works. For instance, Dover Press reprinted the etchings alone in 2000. The LOC has:

Landscape - - United States - - History - - 19th century - - Pictorial works
Engraving, American
United States, Description and travel
United States - - Pictorial works
